Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

Our new La Maman Wedge nursing pillow helps to provide new moms the support they need during breastfeeding sessions. Created specifically with the needs of nursing mamas, the pillow curves around the body to support the baby and mom's arms during a feeding session. While we know that breastfeeding requires more than a pillow to be successful, we hope La Maman Wedge will elevate the whole experience. To help you further succeed on your breastfeeding journey, here are some of the top tips we found for nursing moms.

Ask for help with housework
Breastfeeding can be both exhausting and time-consuming. This is the time to call for backup. While you may not be letting many people into your home right now, don't be shy in asking your partner to do the heavy lifting in the housework and errands department. If you have older children, now is the time to encourage them to earn their allowance and pick up some extra chore work.

Take care of your skin
One of the most common complaints of breastfeeding moms is dry, cracked and irritated nipples. Find a purified lanolin nipple cream or ointment to help moisturize and nourish in between nursing sessions.

Set up a nursing station
Feeding sessions can take up to 45 minutes a time. Set yourself up with anything you will need within arm's reach: Snacks, water, TV, your phone, a nursing pillow (like La Maman Wedge) and a comfy blanket if you get chilly. This is also a good time to select a Netflix series to start binging on.

Remember which breast to start feeding with
New moms have a lot on their sleep-deprived minds. A best practice when breastfeeding is to start the feeding session with the opposite breast you started with the last time. In order to help you remember, try putting a bracelet on the respective arm of the breast you just fed with first, or tie a ribbon around your bra strap.

Your baby's feet
Weird, but true fact: Experts say that baby's nurse better when their feet are touching something, as it can make them feel more secure. When you're feeding your little one, make sure their feet are pressed against your arm or a pillow.

It can take a village
Ultimately, breastfeeding is a marathon--not a sprint. Take it easy on yourself and don't compare your nursing success to that of your friend or sister in law. Raising a child can take a village, so don't be afraid to enlist the help of a lactation consultant if needed.
